Air superiority was essential to any succesful military operation of any size during WWII, baring extremely bad weather or massive amounts of AA guns. The fighter plane was quintessential in gaining this air superiority, so it fulfilled an essential role in WWII. Without it friendly bombers and troops would have been shred to pieces.
