Brought on by either by a mutating disease or just because they can't stay dead in the ground and start getting hungry - Zombies are a classic end of the world scenario.
Someone might as well say it. We all believe Mr. Gore, don't we now!

This is an interesting topic. There's a great talk on ted.com on this topic (linked in the description). Additionally, a quick search for 2012 brings up all kinds of weird thoughts on the world coming to an end in 2012 due to some references in the Mayan calendar.
