With all of the talk around Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight, it's almost a challenge to remember which others should make the list for best movies of 2008. That being said, there were solid animated features, documentaries, and (as noted) superhero blockbusters. So, now it's your turn. Share your top five, explain why, and turn us on to the ones we might have missed in the shuffle. ( Edited by karj )

With my son getting older, we can now watch more movies together. His first visit to the movie theater was to watch Wall-E, and it has resulted in the two of us watching a number of these animated features. Wall-E is beautifully animated while having a (perhaps overly moralistic) subtext. I particularly liked how the first 30 minutes were almost entirely free of dialogue, which seemed to make the film more engrossing as a result.

Clearly the best installation of Batman, probably the best movie of 2008 (for me) , one of my all time favorites, and a Joker by Heath Ledger that makes Jack Nicholson's Joker a caricature

I didn't expect to like this movie so much. That being said, it was really an awful lot of fun. The effects were great, but didn't bog-down the movie as they so often do. The story-line was enjoyable and although over the top, somehow remained compelling, which doesn't seem to happen very often in this genre.

Tarsem's (The Cell) vision is something of its own. In this he tells the story of a suicidal patient who befriends a child in the hospital. He tells her an epic tale which weaves in and out of their unique friendship, and his ulterior motives. It's lush, beautiful and feels like something I've never seen before. (Which is so wonderfully refreshing!)

I found the sensation that came from this movie was a little like watching an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. These characters are all so difficult to watch--flawed, struggling, and ultimately doomed. It's a simple story of a robbery that quickly becomes much more complex and tragic. Ethan Hawke is particularly good in it.

Imagine being one of nine siblings living in a camper with your parents, eating oatmeal every morning and surfing all day. Initially it sounds amazing, right? No school, no suburbs, no structure... but in Surfwise we see that it's all not quite so easy, as the family discusses both the good and the bad aspects of living outside society's rules.

Heist movies are, in my mind, overrated. That being said, this one changed my perspective somewhat. I could empathize with the characters and the situation in the Bank Job more, as there seemed to be a humanity to all of the characters. Someone could truly screw-up, things could be a little funny or awkward, and it wasn't glazed over with clichés. Jason Statham also shows that he has some real depth as an actor in this.

I just found this topic today, and can't understand why there isn't a single nomination in it yet. Didn't anyone see a good movie last year?
