Maybe this should be "best movies that aren't a product in America". Even in Canada, we find Canadian films in the "foreign" section (sigh). Nevertheless, most of these are so much better than the standard Hollywood-fare that it doesn't really matter where they are housed. ( Edited by karj )

Cidade de Deus (City of God)

Buscapé, a poor black youth too frail and scared to become an outlaw but also too smart to be content with underpaid, menial jobs, grows up in a very violent environment. The odds are all against him. But he soon discovers that he can see reality differently than others. His redemption is that he's been given an artist's point of view as a keen-eyed photographer. As Buscapé is not the real protagonist of the film--only the narrator--he is not the one who makes the decisions that will determine the sequence of events. Nevertheless, not only his life is attached to what happens in the story, but it is also through Buscapé's perspective of life that one can understand the complicated layers and humanity of a world, apparently condemned to endless violence.

Pans Labrynth at 1 SERIOUSLY! Is there anyone over 20 voting on this list. This first page alone shows whoever is making these lists aren't qualified to vote for jack - If you have not heard of Ingmar Bergman who has half the top ten or Nicolas Roeg among others -The 400 Blows a top five. You know what this isn't worth it - I'll go elsewhere. But before I go 'Boooo'!

They generally are. You take away the multi-million dollar marketing budgets and a story has to be pretty good to get any attention from the masses.

I watch many foreign films while out of town and I am always surprised to find so many better films than standard Hollywood fare.

Bad Education had to be one of the most intense movies I've ever seen with some crazy plot twists. Ichi the Killer was just great sadomasochistic fun.

If you like Japenese action movies with zombies, then check out Versus. My friends and I rented it at Blockbuster one day without knowing anything about it and it was very entertaining.
