The archetype of SF films. Other movies might actually be better, but when they borrow ideas or references, they'll be from 2001. The plot is thin but great ideas abound - and - whatever else one may think of it, if it isn't *the* all time great work of cinematography it must be in the top three. After 40 years it still stands up brilliantly, because of Kubrick's obsessive drive to do things right. If (like me) you saw it once years ago and didn't like it, do yourself a favour and watch it again off DVD on a wide-screen display with a good sound system. The technical quality is what really makes this shine. A bit of trivia: Kubrick ran out of time and money and never polished the famous "star child" ending to his satisfaction. We can only guess what the movie would have been like had he been able to perfect it... by Anonymous 4 months ago
