Alien actually achieved what the new Battlestar Galactica set out to do: it turned around a tradition of cliched and idealistic science fiction film and presented us with a dark and humanized vision of space. Some of its biggest competition comes from its own sequels and Ridley Scott's other famous SF effort, Blade Runner. However, while the sequels were good movies they weren't the great achievement of the original, and as to Blade Runner ... after umpteen revisions it finally turned into a great film, but this is nothing to boast about.
