Ok, the Matrix is derivative and had no original ideas. However... unlike all the artsy-feetsy beloved-of-geeks stuff it drew from, this actually worked. It presented a solid story with a bundle of interesting ideas and action that anyone could appreciate, and inspired a wave of followers. It's just a pity its sequels didn't live up to it.

Life is one big videogame? Hell yes! The concept behind this movie was every computer gamer's wet dream, we just didn't know it. I'm not even a huge Keanu fan, but he was pretty good as Neo. If the influx of nerds in black after this movie didn't confirm its place in the pantheon of sci-fi, then I don't know what will. They kind of ruined the characters and story with the sequels, but we'll let that slide because of the totally awesome final battle at Zion.
