2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 science fiction film directed by Stanley Kubrick, written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. The film deals with thematic elements of human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial life, and is notable for its scientific realism, pioneering special effects, ambiguous and often surreal imagery, sound in place of traditional narrative techniques, and minimal use of dialogue.

Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release, 2001: A Space Odyssey is today recognized by many critics and audiences as one of the greatest films ever made; the 2002 Sight & Sound poll of critics ranked it among the top ten films of all time. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, and received one for visual effects. In 1991, it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in their National Film Registry.

2001 is the archetype of SF movies. It might not be the *best* SF film but it's the reference for pretty much all of them since then. Plot isn't its strong point, but it rarely is with Kubrick; his movies were three-hour long animated photographs. Whether you love 2001 or hate it, you have to admit that if this isn't the all-time greatest work of cinematography it must be in the top three. If you've only seen 2001 one once years ago on VHS and didn't like it (as I had and didn't), do yourself a favour and watch it again on DVD with a good widescreen and a decent sound system. The technical quality is what makes this really shine. Less-well-known trivia: Kubrick had to cut his planning short because he ran out of time and money. The famous "Star child" ending was the best compromise he could come up with. We can only wonder what the movie would have been had he been able to polish it to perfection.

This movie was at the theater when my spouse and I first started dating. A great fan of science fiction, he loved the film, as I learned what I needed to tolerate, if I wanted to stay in a relationship with this person. The movie turns out to be the classic sci-fi flick and our time together has been wonderful, too.
