Full Metal Jacket is a 1987 war film by Stanley Kubrick, based on the novel The Short-Timers by Gustav Hasford. The title refers to the full metal jacket bullet type of ammunition used by infantry riflemen. The film follows a squad of U.S. Marines from their basic training through their participation in the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War. ( Edited by Schligge)

While this one never quite made it as a great war movie, it's still well worth having just to watch the antics of R. Lee Ermey (the drill sergeant). Kubrick rarely trusted actors to improvise their own dialog (Peter Sellers is the other big exception to that rule), but it paid off big in this case.
