The Shining is a 1980 horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on Stephen King's novel of the same name. Though not initially successful, the film has had status as a cult film for years. It has since gone on to broad mainstream success, now being frequently ranked as one of the best horror films in history and its iconic imagery deeply embedded throughout popular culture, although there was a long interval between its release and its achievement of iconic status. Kubrick co-wrote the screenplay with novelist Diane Johnson. The film stars Jack Nicholson as tormented writer Jack Torrance, Shelley Duvall as his wife, Wendy, and Danny Lloyd as their son, Danny. For me, the best film by Kubrick. It's taken from my favorite book from Stephen King, the novel is such a masterpiece, only Kubrick could make a decent film compared to the book. I love it, plus Nicholson gives the character a really cool personality. I love it!

The Shining isn't in the same league as 2001, Dr. Strangelove or A Clockwork Orange (there's even a glaring clearly visible error right at the opening of the movie, with the ski lifts). Nevertheless, it is a great movie and something of an archetype like the others; references to the movie have abounded in the media ever since its relief.
