Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

"The Dark Side of the Moon" (titled "Dark Side of the Moon" in the 1993 CD edition) is a concept album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd. It was released on 17 March 1973 in the United States and 24 March 1973 in the United Kingdom. The Dark Side of the Moon built on the ideas Pink Floyd had explored in their live shows and recordings, but it lacked the extended instrumental excursions which had characterised their work following the departure of founding member, principal composer and lyricist, Syd Barrett. The album's themes include conflict, greed, aging, and mental illness (or "insanity"), the latter partly inspired by Barrett's deteriorating mental state. Developed during the band's live concert tours, it was recorded between 1972 and 1973 at Abbey Road Studios in London, making use of some of the most advanced studio techniques of the time. Innovative ideas included multitracking, analogue synthesizers, and tape loops.

The Joshua Tree - U2

"The Joshua Tree" is the fifth studio album by Irish rock band U2, released 9 March 1987 on Island Records. Recording sessions took place from July to November 1986 at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. The album features the band's exploration of roots rock, with their music exhibiting influences from blues-rock, folk rock, country music, and gospel music. Lyrically "The Joshua Tree" depicts the band's fascination with America, but also its discontent with the foreign policy of the United States. The album increased the band's stature "from heroes to superstars," according to Rolling Stone. The album produced several hit singles, including "Where the Streets Have No Name", "With or Without You", and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", all of which remain radio staples. The album is one of the world's best-selling albums of all-time, having sold over 25 million copies. In 2007, a remastered version of the album was released to mark the 20th anniversary of its original release.

Nevermind - Nirvana

"Nevermind" is the second studio album by the American rock band Nirvana, released on September 24, 1991. Produced by Butch Vig, "Nevermind" was the group's first release on Geffen Records. Frontman Kurt Cobain sought to make music outside of the restrictive confines of the Seattle grunge scene, drawing influence from groups such as the Pixies and its use of loud/quiet song dynamics. Despite low commercial expectations by the band and its record label, Nevermind became a surprise success in late 1991, largely due to the popularity of its first single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit". By January 1992 it had replaced Michael Jackson's album Dangerous at number one on the Billboard charts. The album has been certified ten times platinum (10 million copies shipped) by the Recording Industry Association of America. "Nevermind" was responsible for bringing alternative rock to a large mainstream audience, and would subsequently be regarded by critics as one of the best rock albums of all time.

Abbey Road - Beatles

"Abbey Road" is the eleventh official U.K. album and seventeenth U.S. album released by The Beatles. Though work on "Abbey Road2 began in April 1969, making it the final album recorded by the band, "Let It Be" was the last album released before the Beatles' dissolution in 1970. "Abbey Road" was released on 26 September 1969 in the United Kingdom, and 1 October 1969 in the United States. It was produced and orchestrated by George Martin for Apple Records. Geoff Emerick was engineer, Alan Parsons was assistant engineer, and Tony Banks was tape operator. It is regarded as one of The Beatles' most tightly constructed albums, although the band was barely operating as a functioning unit at the time.

Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

"Wish You Were Here" is a concept album by the rock band Pink Floyd. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios between January and July 1975 and released on 15 September 1975 (see 1975 in music), the album is regarded as one of Pink Floyd's greatest albums and was ranked 209 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. Its lyrics, written by Roger Waters, concerned the music industry, and questioned the market-oriented record companies' lack of understanding and interest for musicians. The album also pays tribute to Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd's former guitarist and chief songwriter, especially with "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and the title track itself.

OK Computer - Radiohead

OK Computer is the third album by the British alternative rock band Radiohead, released on 16 June 1997. It is Radiohead's breakthrough album, which makes it one of Radiohead's most critically acclaimed albums, along with The Bends and In Rainbows. Radiohead recorded the album in rural Oxfordshire and Bath, during 1996 and early 1997, with producer Nigel Godrich. Although most of the music is dominated by guitar, OK Computer's expansive sound and wide range of influences set it apart from many of the Britpop and alternative rock bands popular at the time, and it laid the groundwork for Radiohead's later, more experimental work. Radiohead does not consider OK Computer a concept album; however, its lyrics and visual artwork emphasise common themes such as consumerism, social disconnection, political stagnation and modern malaise.

Black Holes and Revelations - Muse

"Black Holes & Revelations" is the fourth studio album by English alternative rock band Muse, released on 3 July 2006. Recording was split between New York and France, and it was the first time Muse had taken a more active role in the album's production. The album has political and sci-fi undertones, with the lyrics covering topics as varied as political corruption, alien invasion, New World Order conspiracies as well as more conventional love songs.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco

"Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" is the fourth album by Chicago-based rock band Wilco. The album was completed in 2001, but Reprise Records believed that it would not have crossover pop success and refused to release it. In November 2001, Wilco signed with Nonesuch Records, and the album was officially released on April 23, 2002. It was the first Wilco album with drummer Glenn Kotche, and the last with multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Jay Bennett and drummer Ken Coomer. "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" was a critical and commercial success, and is their best selling album, with over 500,000 copies sold in the U.S. and topping the Pazz and Jop critics' poll for 2002.

Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys

"Pet Sounds" is the eleventh studio album by the American rock band The Beach Boys, released May 16, 1966 on Capitol Records. It has been widely ranked as one of the most influential records ever released in western pop music and has been ranked at number #1 in several music magazines' lists of greatest albums of all time, including New Musical Express, The Times, Mojo Magazine, and Pure Pop. In 2003, It was ranked #2 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. Pet Sounds was created several months after Brian Wilson had quit touring with the band in order to focus his attention on writing and recording. In it, he wove elaborate layers of vocal harmonies, coupled with sound effects and unconventional instruments such as bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, the Electro-Theremin, and dog whistles, along with the more usual keyboards and guitars.

@jonascalva @XxShOpPiNg The thing that you're perhaps missing here is that this is completely community generated. So, add whatever you'd like -- and perhaps invite your friends to do the same.

The person who created the thread has no more influence than anyone else. It's just that they often get more votes because they've added things that people can identify with.

No The Who Albums??? Aww...

I agree on most of them, but this threads are more focused on what the starter likes, rather than what everyone likes, but anyway, there's no way you can make everyone happy can you?

Good thread.

I think the notable part is Doreen's use of the word "album". I think there's a whole group of people who have only heard that word from their parents. That being said, I think "Top five 45s" would be a great topic as well--it would be funny to see how many people are perplexed by what a 45 might be. ;-)

Another thread that really says more about the voter than what we're voting on.
