The headwaters of the Mississippi River are near Grand Rapids, MN, at Lake Itasca. It is picturesque and fun to walk across this very shallow beginning of the river. ( Edited by plmiller)

While in Minnesota, you should not pass up a chance to WALK across the Mississippi River(not frozen either). Visit Itasca State Park and drive to the parking lot of the headwater buildings(peruse those), then hike the pathway to the actual headwaters of the river itself. The water is fresh and cold, only less than a foot deep...take your shoes off and wade across...or you can take the stepping stone path or the log walkway. For anyone who has lived on or near the Mississippi or has even heard of the fury of the river should go to visit the headwaters.
