If you cannot answer it, do not do it! Now that is a fundamental!
I was going to make it "billing", but the issue is broader. I could argue that the difference between an artist and a designer is the market: a designer's product is intended to be sold - that's one of it's functions.

OF course rules are made to be broken - but understanding fundamental principles (and when to apply or challenge yourself to achieve something) and being able to apply objective criteria to the choices you have made is really important IMHO. But I agree the gestalt is a pretty nebulous concept.
Every one of these fundamental "principles" - even "gestalt" is completely subjective and entirely dependent on context, medium, application, audience, even budget. I'm not sure they are even meaningful. Comments?
