Adding Selections to a List

What is a List?

Lists are your selections for a Topic. To create one, just find a Topic you are interested in, and click on the "Add picks" button. This will allow you to quickly make your selections and display them for other viewers.  (To keep things simple and relevant, Lists can only contain five Items.) You can also view your friends' Lists by going to their Profile pages.

How do I add selections to a List?

Just find a Topic you are interested in and click the "Add picks" button. This will bring up a new page that allows you to simply drag and drop popular selections, or type in new ones. You will also find step-by-step instructions that walk you through the process. (You have to be logged-in to add selections to a List.)

Can I change my List after publishing it?

Yes. Just find the Topic page and choose "Edit List" in the "Your Selections" area. This will bring you to a page that allows you to reorder, add or remove your selections. Upon clicking "Publish" your revisions are made and become visible to others. You can also choose to delete your List.

Starting New Topics

What is a Topic?

Topics are areas that Members can create Lists in. Some examples of potential Topics include, "The best moments in my life", or "The worst movies ever made."

How do I start a Topic?

Login to MakeFive and locate the "New Topic" tab near the top of the page. This will lead you through a few easy steps that will help you start a new Topic and add your selections for it.

What can I create a Topic about?

Anything you'd like. MakeFive was designed to accommodate a wide variety of Topics. We encourage you to be creative in how you use the site. We simply ask that you keep it clean. No hateful, pornographic or harmful content should be posted on MakeFive. For more information on posting standards, please view the Terms of Use and Community Guidelines.

Do I have to describe the Topic?

No, but we encourage you to. Even a couple of sentences will help others quickly learn what the Topic is about. This is a good opportunity to give some parameters about how you'd like people to respond to the Topic, as well as any notes you have about it.

What are Tags?

Tags are keywords that describe Topics. For example, a Topic about Movies might be tagged with "film", "cinema", and "Hollywood". This helps others who are interested in Movies find your Topic. Adding tags to your Topic helps others find it more easily.

Can I change the Topic I created, after publishing it?

Yes. Just go to the Topic you created and choose "Edit". In this mode, you can change the description and photo for your Topic. That said, you can't change the Title of the Topic or delete the Topic. This is to ensure that others who have created Lists based on your Topic don't lose their content.

Why does each List Item have options associated?

We've made options available so that you can help others understand what you are referencing. Let's imagine that you started a Topic called "The Greatest Moments of My Life". In it you could include a photo of your child being born, or a story about your summer at the cottage when you were young. You don't have to fill in this information; however, if you don't others are invited to do it for you.

Who can comment or add to Topics I add?

Any registered Members of MakeFive can comment on Topics and make Lists containing their selections for a Topic. (That's what makes it fun!)

Items

What is an Item?

Items are what you put in your Lists. These can range from a sentence to a lengthy description and an image of some sort. You determine how exhaustively you wish to describe the Item. Every Item gets a page of its own, where Members can comment on it. (If you don't add a description or image to an Item you create, others are invited to fill it in for you.)

What can an Item contain?

You can include a text description, as well as an image in jpeg or gif format in the Items you create.

Who can edit an Item?

The creator of the Item has the first opportunity to add a description and/or a photo. If the Item's creator does not choose to add this information, any Member can supply this description.

I found an Item without a description.

If there isn't a helpful description of the Item, you are welcome to lend a hand and describe it. Please do note that your description should be as accurate as possible in order to help other users understand what the Item is about.

Why are Items ranked?

The community's top 5 selections are listed on the left side of the Topic page. This helps others get a feel for how the community feels about a Topic. (We also note the 15 runners up.)

Can I change my selections for a List?

Yes. Just find the Topic page and choose "Edit List" in the "Your Selections" area. This will bring you to a page that allows you to reorder, add or remove your selections. Upon clicking "Publish" your revisions are made and become visible to others. You can also delete your List should you choose.

Can I delete an Item I've added?

No, once Items are created, they are in the system for good. We have to do this, as anyone in the community can comment on the Item or include it in their List. Having Items disappear would become pretty confusing to other users.

Browsing the Site

How do I find my Lists?

After logging-in, choose the "My Profile" tab near the top of the page and choose "Lists" from the sub-navigation. This will bring up all of the Lists that you've added selections to, that are currently active (i.e. have either been added to or commented on by other Members. You can also sort your Lists by how recent they are, or view all of them.

How do I find Lists that interest me?

How do Topics get featured?

Topics that are popular or Topical are often selected for the MakeFive homepage. MakeFive administrators select Topics that they feel are of interest the community. Additionally, the Categories section highlights both the most active and the most recently added Topics in each Category.

Can I watch a Topic?

Yes. Beneath the Topic description is a set of tools. In it, you can choose "Watch this Topic", which adds it to your Watched Topics List. You can always access these by going to "My Profile", "Lists" and choosing "Watched." If you ever want to remove a Topic from your Watched Topics, find it here and select "Ignore".
