What will you do on your Memorial Day Weekend?

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (on May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

1. Go Camping

Memorial Day weekend has always traditionally been the first camping weekend of the summer. The campgrounds are full from the Wednesday or Thursday before. You have got to get your reservations in, probably the year ahead, to have a nice place to camp on this weekend.

2. Visit the cemetary

Memorial Day is the day to commemerate to our loved and lost soldiers. If you have any deceased relatives who have fought in any of America's wars...this is the day to go to the cemetary and lay flowers on the gravesite.

3. Work

I don't know why it is necessary, but many stores decide they should be open over this holiday. So, if you work at one of those stores, you may have to work on this day. You may be compensated with extra pay for your work.

4. Clean the yard

This is the first long weekend during spring that you might have the opportunity to get some of those bigger yard jobs done. This is a good time to get the weeds before they are established and lay the mulch over that area to keep the weeds from germinating in the future.

5. Have a picnic

Picnics are great this time of year. The bugs haven't really taken hold, yet. The three days in a row make it easier for friends and family to come from a distance to share in a picnic...you might even find some watermelon and corn-on-the-cob at the grocery store.

6. Plant the garden

During spring with the usual rain and wind, this may be the first chance we have to put in a garden. The frost is less likely to occur by now and the soil is probably warm enough to let your seeds germinate. Start digging!

7. Mow the lawn

Mowing the lawn may happen every weekend, so why should this weekend be different? Actually, I enjoy staying home when everyone else in the neighborhood has left for their vacation. It is very peaceful.

8. Go horseback riding

I, myself, ride horseback at least three times a week, but it is fun to be on the trails when there are LOTS of others riding, too. This happens on the three day weekends. Spring is always a great time to go horseback riding.
